Faig Gasimov
Biography
Faig Gasimov (19) is a dynamic force actively shaping the future of sustainability and innovation. Based at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, this Azerbaijani changemaker is deeply committed to creating data-driven solutions for tomorrow's complex challenges, fueled by a strong desire to see his nation lead on the global stage.
What makes Faig's perspective truly unique is his multidisciplinary mindset. He sees engineering not as a set of rigid formulas, but as a dynamic tool for tackling real-world problems at the intersection of science, society, and strategy. His strength lies in blending rigorous technical knowledge with financial savvy, policy awareness, and exceptional interpersonal skills. This integrated approach helps him thrive in diverse environments, fostering meaningful dialogue with academics, policymakers, and industry leaders. For example, his work with the Principal of Heriot-Watt University, contributing to research on sustainable mineral innovation and net-zero supply chains, helps position Azerbaijan's voice in the global green economy.

Born and raised in Baku, Faig's journey started in the competitive academic environment of the Baku European Lyceum. There, he quickly learned that ambition needs structure, resilience, and collaboration to go far. Early successes, including winning the national "Sabahin Alimleri" scientific fair and earning a high school silver medal, ignited a desire for new challenges. At 16-17, he moved to Manchester, UK—a childhood dream that unexpectedly brought unique personal hurdles. That challenging first year abroad dramatically reshaped his personality and worldview, making him stronger and more adaptable. In August 2023, he seized a slim chance to transfer to Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, determined to start fresh and achieve something extraordinary before turning 20. This bold decision, powered by unwavering proactive effort, eventually led him to a transformative opportunity.
Faig's most significant accomplishment has been earning the prestigious role of Senior Research Intern, working directly under Professor Richard A. Williams CBE, the Principal and Vice Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University. This unparalleled undergraduate experience allowed him to contribute to international lectures on sustainable mineral innovation, engage in high-level discussions with UK government bodies like IDRIC, and interact with senior figures from global corporations. His efforts culminated in co-authoring an academic paper presented at the esteemed IMPC 2024 Conference in Washington, and he has since published a second research paper as first author in the prestigious Minerals Engineering journal (Elsevier), highlighting transformative approaches to sustainable critical minerals processing. This journey, blending risk-taking, persistence, and genuine passion, proved that with focus and determination, even the most ambitious goals are within reach.

Looking ahead, Faig envisions a future where Azerbaijan excels in innovation, sustainability, and human capital. His long-term goal involves building dynamic ecosystems - platforms where young minds, businesses, and policymakers can align around ambitious, future-forward objectives. He aims to be a vital connector, bringing people together to solve complex problems and spark real transformation. Faig firmly believes Azerbaijan holds immense potential, and he's committed to contributing his energy to challenge the norm, take risks, and empower others, ensuring a smarter, more sustainable, and opportunity-rich future for his nation.

Faig's journey carries a powerful message for the youth of Azerbaijan: "You don’t need permission to lead. You don’t need perfect conditions, polished credentials, or a smooth path ahead. The future belongs to those who act—those who take initiative, even when it’s risky, uncertain, or unconventional." He's a firm believer that hard work, a relentless mindset, and total conviction will eventually pay off, regardless of initial struggles.
Faig Gasimov embodies the power of a purpose-driven mindset. More than a chemical engineer, he's a visionary, a connector, and an inspiring leader, actively engineering a more sustainable and prosperous future for Azerbaijan and beyond.
